Literacy and Technology? They're inseparable!
Jerilyn's Daily Log base on If You Give a Mouse a Cookie
If you give a teacher a bag, they’re going to ask for books to go in it. When you give them the books, they’ll probably ask for pens and highlighters to annotate and make notes.
When they’re finished, they’ll ask if they did correctly. They they’ll want to think, pair, share. When they share, they’ll be able to create a definition of literacy. So they’ll probably ask how to create a literacy action plan.
When they’ve gotten an answer, they’ll want to know when it’s due. They’ll start panicking. They might get carried away and start filling out the plan. They may even assume it’s due in two weeks.
When they’re done, they’ll probably want to take a break. You’ll have to direct them to the restrooms and vending area. They’ll get a caffeine fix and stretch their legs.
They’ll probably ask questions in the parking lot. So you’ll answer their questions and that will spur more questions. When they hear the answers, they might get so excited they mention Pitbull. Some will ask “Who is Pitbull?”
They’ll share obstacles in teaching literacy. When they’ve shared the obstacles, they’ll discover other teachers have the same obstacles. Then they’ll all want a solution, which means they’ll need Pathways to the Common Core.
They’ll look back at their two column notes, which will remind them they have homework. So…they’ll get their books. And chances are if they get their books, they’re going to want a bag to put them in.

PALA Reflections on Monday, July 15, 2013
Monday was assessment day
We learned so much from Heady
She had lots of tips to share
And now we feel more ready
She said we must facilitate
And not just impart knowledge
This is hard for some of us
It's not how we learned in college
To write standard based questions
We need time and understanding
A sounding board is helpful too
When the standard seems demanding
Aspects of Quality show us
How standards mastery looks
We must know this when writing questions
And not get them just from books
Heady said graphic organizers are
A great way to assess
She even shoed us one to use
For a social studies test
We ended our day with mini lessons
They all were so exciting
Now when we go back to school
Our classrooms will be more inviting
