What is PALA?
PALA is an acronym that stands for the Purchase Area Literacy Academy. The Collaborative Center for Literacy Development is committed to “improving student achievement through rigorous professional development,” [1] and the Adolescent Literacy Project grant provides this opportunity for content area teachers of grades 5-12, in the nineteen counties of far Western Kentucky, an opportunity to address the Kentucky Core Academic Standards for English Language Arts, and Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science and Technical Subjects and integrate them effectively to emphasize skills in reading and writing. Studies show that reading and writing across the curriculum are essential to learning. Without strategies for reading course material and opportunities to write thoughtfully about it, students have difficulty mastering concepts.[2]
